1938年9月30日，英国首相张伯伦从德国慕尼黑回到英国，他在慕尼黑同法德意三国签署了《慕尼黑协定》，英法意将承认德国对捷克斯洛伐克苏台德地区的占领，而德国向世界承诺永不扩张，苏台德危机得到和平解决。张伯伦首相刚下飞机，就受到记者和民众簇拥，在场群众为和平欢呼。张伯伦首相也迫不及待地挥舞起《慕尼黑协定》，朗读起协定上的内容，并兴奋地发表了这一篇简短的讲话，宣布自己带回了“一代人的和平”。
1939年3月15日，希特勒撕毁了《慕尼黑协定》，命令德国军队对捷克斯洛伐克发动入侵。
1939年3月17日，捷克斯洛伐克全境陷落。

The settlement of the Czechoslovakian problem, which has now been achieved is, in my view, only the prelude to a larger settlement in which all Europe may find peace.

This morning I had another talk with the German Chancellor, Herr Hitler, and here is the paper which bears his name upon it as well as mine. Some of you, perhaps,have already heard what it contains but I would just like to read it to you,

"We regard the agreement signed last night and the Anglo-German naval agreement as symbolic of the desire of our two peoples never to go to war with one another again."

We are resolved that the method of consultation shall be the method adopted to deal with any other questions that may concern our two countries and we are determined to continue our efforts to remove possible sources of difference and thus to contribute to assure the peace of Europe.
